Formerly a favoured holiday destination for farmers, fishermen and divers, Hondeklip Bay is separated from Springbok by 104 km of gravel road, the Messelpad Pass and Soebatsfontein – a quaint village built next to a spring at the foot of the escarpment. Hondeklip Bay’s harbour, from which copper ore brought by ox-wagon from Springbok was exported before the port was supplanted by Port Nolloth, now serves fishing and diamond mining boats.
From Cape Town:
Travel north on the N7 towards Springbok. Approximately 8km past Garies, exit left at the sign “HONDEKLIP BAY”.
Continue straight with this gravel road for 83km to Hondeklip bay.
VERY IMPORTANT: PLEASE ENSURE TO REFUEL AT GARIES BEFORE DIVERTING TO HONDEKLIP BAY AS THERE IS NO FUEL IN HONDEKLIP BAY.
From Springbok:
Travel west towards “Kleinsee” for approximately 35km. Just before the tar road ends, exit left towards “Kommagas”
In “Kommagas” there will be a split in the road (Tavern/Liquor store in the middle of the fork) – keep to the right. Continue with the gravel road for approximately 35km until you reach a T-junction (tar road between Kleinsee and Koingnaas) – turn left towards Koignaas.
Continue for 57km to Koignaas. Fuel available at Koignaas, but certain hours only. Follow the gravel road to Hondeklip Bay (approximately 20km).
VERY IMPORTANT: PLEASE ENSURE TO REFUEL AT GARIES BEFORE DIVERTING TO HONDEKLIP BAY AS THERE IS NO FUEL IN HONDEKLIP BAY.
