GO ON AN EXCURSION AROUND CAPE ST FRANCIS.

Plan a day trip and experience the rugged beauty and tranquility of our local wildlife and landscapes. We highlighted some must-see destinations on this page.

BAVIAANSKLOOF
Just 1 hours drive from Cape St Francis lies approximately 270 000 ha. of unspoiled, mountainous terrain known as The Baviaanskloof. Translated as ‘The Valley Of Baboons’, the worlds largest nature reserve begins in the East at Komdomo, leads through the rugged beauty of the “Grootrivier” Gorge on its winding path all the way towards Willowmore in the West.

The nature reserves breath-taking scenery includes sights of deep gorges, twisting streams and rivers and towering mountain cliffs. Open plateaux and valleys are scattered throughout the area resulting in truly magnificent vistas. The highest point in the mountain ranges is the Cockscomb that rises to a height of 1 758 metres above sea level.

The area is home to an abundance of wildlife including Cape Mountain Zebra, Common Eland and Savanna Buffalo. Today there are 48 mammal species found in the reserve – so keep those cameras at the ready and with such a rich and diverse landscape, it is not surprising to find that there are around 300 species of birds too!

We highly recommend a visit to the Baviaanskloof and all it has to offer and now you can do it style:

Leaving in our fully air conditioned people carrier we will take you on a stunning journey through the citrus valley of Patensie to ʻTolbosʼ where breakfast will be served.

Youʼll then continue your journey along a breathtaking moutain road to Poortjies. Various walks are available with incredible view points to really take in the true beauty of The Baviaanskloof.

Your lunch time stop will be the majestic setting of Rooihoek, deep within the Baviaans mountains. With a clean crisp river, perfect for swimming, and pristine white sands Rooihoek is the perfect location to rest and refuel.

GAME DRIVE
Youʼll just love the laid back beach lifestyle and quiet peaceful village of Cape St Francis, but there are also many trips and excursions available in and around this little piece of paradise.

A truly South African experience at Addo Elephant Park and Schotia safaris…With an exciting schedule ahead, your day begins with a game drive at the third largest national park in South Africa – Addo elephant park.

This stunning game reserve boasts the largest concentration of elephants in the World with visitors having viewed over 100 elephants in a single game drive. It is also home to many other species including lions, buffalo, black rhino, spotted hyena, leopard, antelope and zebra to name but a few.

Stretching from the semi-arid karoo area in the north around Darlington Dam, over the rugged Zuurberg Mountains, through the Sundays River valley and south to the coast between Sundays River mouth and Bushmanʼs river mouth, Addo covers about 180 000 hectares (444 700 acres) and includes the Bird and St Croix Island groups. After lunch you will then be taken to your second destination for the day – Schotia Safari Park. This malaria free reserve is probably the most densely stocked reserve in Africa, and with over 40 mammal species and approximately 2000 animals, can offer consistently good game viewing throughout the year.

To finish off your amazing experience you will dine amongst the stars as a South African bush feast is prepared over open fires. After filling your memory cards (and your stomachs) you’ll be taken back to a 4 star guest lodge for a well desrved over night stay.

The next morning a stunning South African country breakfast will be served before picking you up and bringing you back to Cape St Francis Resort.

HUISKLIP COASTAL NATURE RESERVE
A short 65km journey from Cape St Francis will take you to the beautiful coastal nature reserve of Huisklip.
Situated in the heart of Tsitsikamma, Eastern Cape this stunning 300ha paradise is the home to an abundance of wildlife, indigenous plants and incredible rock formations. The Tsitsikamma, the ‘Garden of the Garden Route’, welcomes you to the area the ancient San people called the ‘place of sparkling waters’. Here the high mountains, deep gorges and rugged coastline are covered with tall indigenous forests and vast, unspoilt stands of the Cape’s unique fynbos.

This is truly a place of abundant waters with rivers and cascades tumbling to an ocean lined with rocky crags and white, sandy beaches. Beautiful indigenous forest, protected by the State, is home to ancient trees such as Yellowwood, Stinkwood, Hard Pear, Ironwood, Kamassi and many others. Over time, rivers have cut awesome gorges through the coastal plateau as they flow down to the spectacular coastline of
Huisklip.

Whether you want to walk the many trails or simply relax and take in the stunning views, we highly recommend a visit… and we are here to help.

Let us make your day trip all the more special…

Leaving at 9.30am our fully air conditioned people carrier will take you through the beautiful Tsitsikamma Forest, the most productive milk producing area in the World, leading you to your final destination – Huisklip.

Once there, a wide selection of walks are available for all levels of fitness, including a walk to the famous rock formations. Having worked up an appetite, a barbecue (or braai as we like to call it) will be lit (food inclusive of price). The afternoon is then yours, simply relax and take in the stunning scenery or continue to explore with further hikes and trails.

RECHARGE WITH A GETAWAY TO SKAMANIA LODGE, WASHINGTONBy Debbie Stone Pictures by Debbie StoneOnce again, I found myself flying through the forest with the greatest of ease. Only this time, I was on the zipline course at Skamania Lodge, Washington, a well-known resort within Columbia Gorge country.Surrounded by natural beauty, the lodge is an idyllic property with inviting guest rooms and common areas plus an impressive Northwest art collection.Amenities include award-winning dining, a spa and fitness center, swimming pool, hot tubs, golf and disc golf courses and plenty of other outdoor activities to satisfy any adrenaline junkie. Do as much or as little as you want at this all-ages playground, where you can re-energize, refresh and renew.SKAMANIA LODGE WASHINGTON HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONEGO ZIPLININGThe zipline tour that I experienced included seven different lines, offering a good variety of distances, heights and speeds. In addition, there are three sky bridges and an auto-belay station. As you soar through the woods in Tarzan or Jane fashion, make sure to open your eyes, as the views from high in this stretch of Pacific Northwest rainforest are magical. The guides are upbeat and fun, inserting entertaining banter throughout the well-designed course. They encourage you at each step of the way and show you how to use different positions to up the ante if you want.Lay back for example, go hands-free, try spinning or a slingshot push off the tree. And definitely assume a cannonball for speed.IMITATE A NINJA, CHANNEL PAUL BUNYANThere’s also an aerial park on the property, where you can test your strength, balance and agility, as you maneuver through different challenges of varying degrees of difficulty. You are safely carabineered in so you can really let loose and do your best ninja imitation. While you’re at it, add axe throwing to your repertoire. Channel your competitive inner Paul Bunyan, as you toss your axe at the wooden target to score points. And experience that powerful, primal release when you land a Bull’s Eye.GET A WORKOUT ON THE FITNESS TRAILThough there’s an indoor fitness center at the lodge with all the bells and whistles, I decided to get a full-body workout on the Gorge Loop Fitness Trail. This trail combines hiking with challenges at five fitness stations. You can use the provided equipment to do your own regimen or follow the recommended exercises listed at each station. There are modifications for different levels, which I appreciated. And being immersed in the lush natural beauty of the environment is a definite plus.MELLOW OUT WITH SOME FOREST BATHINGIf that’s not enough, the lodge has two other hiking trails that lead you through a wooded landscape. They start near the Golf Shop and range in distance from 1.5 to 1.75 miles long.Do some forest bathing along the way. And if you are unfamiliar with this activity, the lodge has a guide you can follow. It’s all about absorbing the atmosphere, getting in touch with nature, being mindful and embracing your senses.Research has shown there are substantial health benefits of such a practice, leading to lower blood pressure and a decrease in stress levels. And no, there’s no actual bathing required.SOAK AND THEN SPAContinue the relaxation vibe with a soak in the outdoor or indoor hot tubs. Then book a restorative massage or replenishing facial at the Waterleaf Spa.I had an incredible facial with Laurie, who incorporated a number of elements into my session, including an anti-aging mask, hot stone massage and ice balls. I felt like my skin had been brought back from the dead.FOOD, GLORIOUS FOODOf course, you’re going to work up an appetite during your stay. Just know that you’re in good hands with the chefs at Skamania. In the Cascade Dining Room, the menu emphasizes fresh, seasonal and local whenever possible. One night, I started with a cup of creamy and flavorful Steelhead Chowder, followed by the Pan Roasted Steelhead with a veggie hash.Another night I had the hearty NW Seafood Stew, chockful of clams, shrimp and Pacific fish in a tomato fennel broth. My husband enjoyed the Lodge Seafood Salad, which had clams, poached shrimp and smoked Steelhead. For a more casual, pub-style environment, go next door to the River Rock Lounge, where you’ll find small plates and sharable items, along with local brews, creative cocktails and mocktails, and fine wines. If weather permits, sit outside on the deck and take in the unparalleled views or watch a game of frisbee on the large lawn.Later, make your way to the fire pit for some good old-fashioned smores. Get a smore kit from the gift shop and roast those marshmallows to golden brown perfection. Then you know the drill – smash them between two graham crackers with a piece of chocolate for that yummy (and sticky) campfire treat.STAY IN A TREE HOUSE FOR SOME RUSTIC CHARMSkamania Lodge, Washington accommodations are spacious and comfy, with fireplaces and views of the Columbia River or old-growth forest. If you’re looking for a bit of rustic hospitality, opt to stay in one of the Tree Houses. These secluded abodes are graced with expansive decks, indoor/outdoor fireplaces, king-size beds and full baths. Each has an outdoor dining and recreational area with a fire pit below. They stand twenty feet in the air and boast large windows to make you feel as though you’re sleeping amid the canopy of trees.THE COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE IS AN OUTDOOR PLAYGROUNDThough there’s more than enough to do at Skamania, outside the doors of the lodge you’ll discover a world-class recreational paradise ripe for exploring. The Columbia River Gorge, a protected National Scenic Area, straddles Washington and Oregon and spans nearly 300,000 acres. It boasts the greatest concentration of high waterfalls in North America, including the impressive Multnomah Falls, the grand dame of them all.Within a half hour, you can reach a number of these cascading beauties. Go early in the morning to avoid crowds, as this is a popular corridor.HEAD TO THE TOP OF BEACON ROCK FOR INSPIRING VIEWSIf you’re a hiker, this area is nirvana with 57 trails that when combined, stretch over 218 miles in length. For memorable panoramic vistas (and some good cardio), climb Beacon Rock, the second-largest monolith on the northern hemisphere, standing 848 feet tall.It shares its prominence with such geological features as California’s El Capitan, Georgia’s Stone Mountain and Wyoming’s Devil’s Tower. Once the core of an ancient volcano, Beacon got its name from Lewis and Clark, who encountered this behemoth on their westward journey to the Pacific. To reach the top of Beacon Rock involves a near-continuous series of 54 switchbacks, many of them less than twenty feet long, along with numerous concrete and wooden bridges. The trail though is not too steep and it’s lined by handrails. Most importantly, your efforts will be well rewarded with inspiring views of the mighty Columbia River and the surrounding area.CHECK OUT THIS MUSEUM FOR ALL THINGS COLUMBIA GORGETo learn more about the history and culture of this special region, check out the nearby Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum. You can spend hours here, as the displays are interesting and interactive. There are thirteen exhibit areas focusing on such themes as First Peoples, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the development of pioneer communities along the Columbia, the eras of the railroad, highway and sternwheeler, Bonneville Dam and the geology of the Gorge. The largest gallery is all about the timber and fishing industries in the Gorge. It contains a waterfall, a replica of an 1882 fishwheel, a 1921 Mack log truck loaded with cedar logs, a stationary steam engine from 1895, and suspended from the ceiling, a 1917 “Jenny” bi-plane, typical of the first airplanes that delivered air mail in the Gorge.DISCOVER WATERFRONT CHARM AND SOME GREAT FISH AND CHIPS IN STEVENSONAnother “off-campus” destination is the town of Stevenson, a charming waterfront community with eclectic shops, galleries, local restaurants and an award-winning brewpub. I enjoyed some tasty fish and chips at Clark and Lewie’s while sitting on the outdoor patio with a view of the river.Afterward, I strolled down to the dock and watched the riverboats cruising by and the windsurfers gliding across the water. This area offers some of the top locations to catch waves, as the Columbia acts as a funnel for wind that blasts down the river corridor.WINE, BEER, SPIRITS GALOREThose who want to do a deep dive into the Gorge’s wine scene have plenty of options, as there are forty-plus wineries in the area, located on both sides of the river. Not into wine? No problem.Take your pick from a dozen or so brewpubs, cider houses and even a distillery or two to meet your libations needs.Author Bio: Debbie Stone is an established travel writer and columnist, who crosses the globe in search of unique destinations and experiences to share with her readers and listeners.
