THE BIG FIVE ON YOUR DOORSTEP
A number of world-renowned game lodges, wildlife reserves and safari destinations can be found along the Garden Route, each providing a truly unique experience that is suitable for the whole family.
OTHER WILDLIFE EXCURSIONS
Sanctuaries like Birds of Eden, the largest free flight aviary in the world, offers an award-wining live forest experience. At the Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre, visitors are treated to the unique experience of meeting indigenous wild cats and cheetahs in an interactive family-orientated programme. Ocean safaris take visitors out into the deep blue and offer opportunities to spot whales and dolphins, depending on their migratory patterns.
A visit to Monkeyland is amongst the most popular family excursions situated along the Garden Route – one that treats visitors to an eco-tourism experience in its award-winning primate sanctuary. Another landmark on this iconic stretch is the Knysna Elephant Park with its large domesticated herd of Africa’s gentle giants, all of which have been rescued, adopted and rehomed.
KNYSNA LAGOON
Knysna, a town enclosed by the green canopy of indigenous trees, is an award winning beacon beacon of South African tourism along the Garden Route. It is situated on the northern shore of a large warm-water estuary known as the Knysna Lagoon. This sparkling body of water is where five fresh water rivers, flowing from the Outeniqua Mountains, meets a surge of sea water from the Indian Ocean. Marking this meeting place are two large headlands known as the Knysna Heads – a pair of towering sandstone cliffs. This area provides an idyllic setting for sundowner cruises, shopping at the Knysna Waterfront and leisurely dining while overlooking the glassy lagoon.
LIVE THE ADVENTURE
The commercial Bloukrans bridge is the site of the world’s highest bungee and is at the top of the must-do lists of many extreme sporting enthusiasts. Bungee jumping at this location entails a drop of more than 200 metres into the lush Bloukrans River Valley below.
Treetop canopy tours in the Tsitsikamma forest combine the thrill of sliding down suspended cables, with the unrivalled opportunity to explore the region’s indigenous bird life and vegetation. More activities for adventure seekers include quad biking, paragliding, water rafting and Huey helicopter rides. Whether on land or sea, the Garden Route offers a wide range of opportunities for unforgettable thrills and riveting experiences.
WINE REGION
Illustrious, award-winning wine farms can be found throughout the length and breadth of the Garden Route. The maritime Mediterranean climate of this region yields cool, wet winters and moderately hot summers – ideal conditions for the cultivation of a wide range of red, white and rosé wines.
FAMILY FUN
The array of leisure destinations along the Garden Route are predominantly geared towards inclusive family fun. From wildlife tours to boat trips and adventure activities, most locations include a child-friendly component to ensure a memorable experience for all.
