Destination Gansbaai
Just 2 and a bit hours from Cape Town and a little over an hour from Cape Agulhas the Southern Tip of Africa, lies Gansbaai, Gold winner for the World’s Best destination for Responsible Tourism 2015, well established as the Great White Shark Capital of the World™ and sanctuary and nursery for the Southern Right Whales from July to December each year.
The Natural Adventure Destination
The village and surrounds are unpretentious and relatively undeveloped with dramatic rocky shorelines interspersed with pristine white beaches. There are numerous coves and tidal pools along the shoreline which offer quiet, protected spots to walk, swim or soak up the sun.
To the east are the Duinefontein mountains with pockets of indigenous forests, waterfalls and fynbos for spectacular hikes, mountain biking and trail running. Then to the west is Walker Bay and Van Dyks Bay and the now famous Dyer and Geyser Islands. With a west aspect to the sea, there is nothing quite as spectacular as watching the sun disappear into the ocean on the horizon, filling the sky with splashes of orange, yellow, red, purple and pink hues.
What started out as a traditional fishing village some years back, has become a sought after outdoor adventure destination for foreign and domestic travellers. Famous for the Great White Shark population just off our shores, Gansbaai is the destination for shark cage diving and its diverse marine ecology. Local surfers brag about the waves and right breaks, guided tours are available to discover the mysteries of shoreline life, visits to the series of stone-age caves has to be on your agenda, or a 4X4 challenge on prescribed routes. And then of course, fishing for those intrepid fisherman, from a boat or land, the fish are usually biting!
The traditional harbour is still active, with 9 trawlers and a processing plant that cans sardines & pilchards and produces fish meal for livestock farmers. Still the biggest employer in town, the factory plays an important role in our community adding value with their generous sponsorships and contributions towards local events and charities.
Lomond is a great local wine farm, producing a variety of very interesting and special wines. These can be tasted in an ancient Milkwood forest over a platter of meat and cheese. Die Werf is another small local wine producer and can be tasted and purchased in Baardskeerdersbos at Arthurs cellar.
We have a variety of restaurants ranging from world class to fun and local diners and pubs.
