Single Bedroom Family Tree houses
The Eyrie & Tranquility
We have 2 one-bedroom family tree houses that are ideal for a family of four, they stretch through the canopy exposing a high view of the forested Karatara gorge far below.
The huge Safari tent includes Queen sized bed, double bunk and an en suite bathroom. There is a fully equipped kitchen, dining and lounge facilities enclosed by glass to maximize the view. The family tree houses are toddler friendly. They have large family corner baths.
The site was selected after extensive exploration. Small exploratory paths were cut to extend the natural animal trails through the dense, virgin forest. While searching for an ideal location a particularly thorny struggle led us to the fallen remains of an invader Rooikrans tree. Light streamed through the rip in the canopy far above, lifting the gloom from the forest floor. By climbing along the fallen tree and standing on tiptoes, the amazing view of the valley below was revealed…
The 30m path winds through the forest carefully avoiding damage to the indigenous trees. The boardwalk provides an organic entrance onto the unit.
We carefully planted the main poles underpinning the tree house into the ground, avoiding root damage. The substructure held the scaffolding to build the deck, without damage to the sensitive forest floor.
The back of the unit is 1m off the ground, while the front is above the tree line, towering 8m off the steeply plunging slope below.
Two Bedroom Treehouses
Philosophers Perch & The Forest Elders
Originally designed for families with older kids, our 2 bedroom, 1-bathroom tree houses allow for a larger grouping. The tree houses both have 2 separate bedrooms with indoor sitting areas within the bedrooms. They have a large deck area with a Weber BBQ. The kitchens have a gas cooker and a microwave.
Philosophers Perch was the first tree house we built. It flows around the existing trees. In the indigenous forest, the trees are all protected, so rather than damage them in any way they are incorporated into the design. The kitchen curves around the side of the deck. The loo and shower open into dense forest, however the only creature likely to witness your ablutions will be a Knysna Lourie. It’s a summer tree house with an open sitting dining area between the bedrooms. It is a great tree house for photographs.
The Forest Elders has recently been rebuilt, large bedrooms incorporate indoor sitting areas. Situated amongst huge trees, far from the main entertainment area, it has fabulous views over the indigenous forest and out towards the Outeniqua Mountains. Its railings are closer together than Philosophers Perch and so is safe for younger children too.
Teniqua Treetops is located high on the foothills of the Outeniqua mountain range. Seven Passes Road is 2 km away, offering a scenic drive. Sedgefield beaches are just 20 minutes’ drive away and Knysna is 30 minutes’ drive.
