Bredasdorp is an agricultural town in the heart of the Overberg – known as South Africa’s first “dorp”. The rolling hills surrounding the town are home to many sheep which are farmed for their wool. Wheat is also farmed on a large scale.
The area lays claim to the De Hoop Nature Reserve which covers 60 000 hectares of endangered fynbos. This reserve is home to South Africa’s largest population of Bontebok and also the endangered Mountain Zebra. An ideal spot for game viewing and birdwatching (South Africa’s national bird, the Blue Crane, can be seen too).
From Bredasdorp:
Take the R319 to Swellendam. After 7km from the railwaycrossing, you turn right to Karsrivier farm of Boeta and Cecilia Wessels. You will pass their homestead and after 2.5km on this dirt road, you will reach a big gate with the sign of Jack’s Place and Old Sam’s Place. At this gate you will find the keys in a big blue box. Please lock the gate again, as we have game in this camp. Now you will see the house on your left.

Whilst here, it would be recommended to take a look through the Shipwreck Museum which is filled with artifacts remaining from the many ships which have sunk along the treacherous coast of Agulhas. Other places to see include Kapula Candles, Julian Ceramics and the Audrey Blignault Room which pays homage to this famous writer. There is also an airfield nearby where exciting airshows are held. Something to get your adrenalin pumping in this otherwise lazy town.
