Children on Safari
Lalibela’s malaria-free location makes us ideal for families travelling with children, who are wanting to combine a family safari with the Garden Route and Cape Town.
We have devised a children’s programme which we feel optimises the safari experience with quality family time. There is a special game drive vehicle for children and they are taken by their own ranger for shorter game drives, where care is taken to avoid close encounters with dangerous game.
Other features of the children’s programme include arts and crafts, bush skills, African stories, special child-friendly food and babysitting during certain hours (including adult dinner and game drives).
Each family is different and children require varying degrees of attention, which is why the emphasis at Lalibela is to be as flexible as possible to ensure memorable family holidays.
Children of all ages are welcome at MARK’S CAMP which has 4 twin rooms on one side of the lodge and 4 family rooms on the other side of the lodge.
The overnight rate for children under 12 includes accommodation, children’s programme & game drives, all meals and all drinks at Mark’s Camp and on game drives. To get the most out of your safari experience we recommend that you spend at least 2 nights with us.
Children under 12 pay 50% of the adult rate.
Mark’s Camp
The stone and thatch chalets and main lodge of Mark’s Camp are decorated in a relaxed Pan-African style. This safari lodge sleeps up to 20 guests in eight chalets.
Each comfortably furnished chalet has an en-suite bathroom and ceiling-fans for those warm summer nights. The chalets open up onto your own private viewing deck with views over the surrounding bush.
One of the appealing features of Mark’s Camp is the abundance of birdlife which can be viewed from the rooms, pool deck (Mark’s Camp has two swimming pools) or central lounge area.
Blessed with a large waterhole in front of the lodge, it is not uncommon for guests to see antelope, giraffe, elephant and predators coming to the waterhole!
Between game drives, guests can relax in the large lounge, bird watch from the viewing decks or laze around one of the two swimming pools.
Mark’s Camp has an outdoor dining “boma” for fireside dinners and open-air brunches, as well as a gracious indoor dining area.
The bar area is elevated and guests have great views of the waterhole from the safety of the bar!
The overnight rate at Mark’s Camp includes accommodation, 2 game drives (evening & morning), all meals and all drinks at Mark’s Camp and on game drives. To get the most out of your safari experience we recommend that you spend 2 or 3 nights with us.

Big 5 Safari at Lalibela
We pride ourselves on our ability to offer you the best in Big 5 game viewing. At Lalibela we are blessed to have phenomenal sightings of the Big 5 as well as the various other species that visitors so enjoy seeing.
In addition to the larger, more known wild animals, Lalibela has various lesser-known species and our rangers delight in exposing our guests to these – the curious spring hare is as fascinating as the mighty African elephant!
Apart from the wide variety of wildlife, there is a plethora of birdlife to be found on Lalibela – the keen birder can expect to spot birds on safari, at the lodge or even from the viewing deck of their room!
Your Safari Experience
Exciting Game Drives – Early morning and sunset game drives in an open vehicle with an experienced game ranger bring you face to face with a multitude of game species.
Excellent Game Viewing – Experience a multitude of game species ranging from the mighty elephant, lion, rhino and buffalo to the tiny blue duiker and rock hyrax.
Lalibela Game Reserve is also home to cheetah, hyena, hippo, giraffe, zebra, warthog and numerous species of antelope, such as eland, kudu, bushbuck and wildebeest. On thrilling sunset drives under the vast African sky, we also search for the elusive bat-eared fox, aardvark, black-backed jackal, aardwolf and the curious spring hare.
Wide Open Spaces – Lalibela Game Reserve comprises 7,500 hectares (18,500 acres) of valley bushveld, savannah grassland, fynbos, riverine forest and acacia woodland, all coming together to make Lalibela the ideal home for the Big 5 in Southern Africa.
There are no public roads running through the property and all the animals, including the predators, roam freely throughout the entire reserve.
An overnight stay at Lalibela includes 2 game drives per night stayed – one on the afternoon of your arrival and one the following morning.
