Malachite Cottage
Malachite is a free standing thatched cottage ideal for a family of 4 with young children. It is conveniently situated within earshot of the kiddies playground and lodge facilities.
It consists of 1 double room, 1 room with 2 single beds, 1 bathroom with bath and another with shower, lounge and dining room with a log fire. The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas hob and oven, microwave, fridge and all the necessary cutlery & crockery. It also has its own deck with views of the river and its own braai facility.
Mangrove Cottage
Mangrove is a free standing thatched cottage ideal for a maximum of 4 adults & 1 child. It is situated 200m away from any other buildings and offers excellent privacy. It is a fully fenced pet friendly cottage.
It consists of 1 double room and 1 twin room, 1 bathroom with bath and shower, open planned lounge/dining area with log fire. It has a single bed-sitter in the open plan area for an additional child. The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas hob and oven, microwave, fridge/freezer and all the necessary cutlery & crockery. It also has its own veranda with views of the river and its own braai facility.
Giant Cabin
Secluded log home which offers excellent privacy and spectacular views. It is ideal for a maximum of 12 adults.
Upstairs Giant has 2 double en suite rooms leading out onto veranda’s. The main en suite has a ball and claw bath from which you can overlook Thrombosis gorge! The second en suite has a shower only. The additional 3 large twin rooms share a separate shower, separate toilet and additional bathroom. The spacious open plan fully equipped kitchen, lounge, dining area and huge veranda with braai facilities are perfect for large family gatherings. There is a TV with DVD/VHS player but no TV reception.
There is an additional en suite room downstairs with its own entrance.
Pied Cottage A
Semi detached 2 sleeper unit with double en suite room upstairs, beautiful views of the river from your bed, bathroom built for two with a large tub and shower. There is an inter leading door to Pied B which can be unlocked for two couples travelling together who prefer to each have their own en suite rooms.
Downstairs – open plan kitchenette, lounge (with log fire) and dining area. The kitchen is fully equipped with a mini electric hob/oven, microwave and fridge/freezer. Open-plan dining area has double doors opening out onto the veranda with gorgeous views and braai facilities.
Pied Cottage B
Semi detached 2 sleeper unit with double en suite room upstairs, beautiful views of the river from your bed, bathroom built for two with a large tub and shower. Woodland Cottage
Woodland is a free standing double storey house set about 150m away from any other buildings. It is ideal for a maximum of 6 adults and 4 children. It offers excellent privacy, comfortable accommodation, and beautiful views. It has its own access down onto rolling lawn and the river island beyond.
Upstairs It sleeps 8 upstairs with 1 double en suite room (bath and shower), an additional double room, a twin room and a bunk bed on the landing with an additional bathroom with shower only to share.
Downstairs is the fully equipped kitchen with gas hob and oven, fridge/freezer and all the necessary crockery and cutlery, open plan lounge, dining area and another bathroom with bath only. There is a bed-sitter in the lounge downstairs suitable for an additional 2 children (single bed with another single which pulls out from below)
Pygmy Cottage
Our little free standing, double storey unit nestled in the trees. Pygmy has a steep stairway leading to the loft bedroom and is only suited to able bodied couples.
There is an en suite room upstairs with a double bed and balcony overlooking the gardens and river. The bathroom has a shower only. Downstairs there is an open plan kitchenette with a gas hob, microwave and fridge/freezer. The dining/lounge area (with log fire), lead out onto a deck with braai facilities & lovely views.
Bower Honeymoon Suite
The Bower is a free standing thatched unit set away from the family accommodation with its own private entrance through a rose covered pergola.
Within the room there is an extra length king size oak canopy bed & a comfy sofa in front of the log fire. The kitchenette has a gas hob, fridge, microwave and all the necessary cutlery & crockery. The bathroom is made for two with a corner bath and shower. The Bower has its own braai facilities and a private deck overlooking the river.
We are situated 2 hours from DBN and 6 hrs from Johannesburg in the foothills of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site.

Fishing
We have 2.5km of rainbow trout inhabited river frontage. The rivers are open from 1st Sept to 31 May annually. Should the river conditions be unfavorable, there is a dam on our neighbouring farm (4km away) – booking essential. The dam is open for year round fishing enjoyment. There is free tuition for beginners. We also have a small bass dam which provides hours of fun for children. We keep a small selection of flies and lures for sale and rods to hire.
Walking, mountain biking and birding
There is a gentle walk along the river looking down onto Thrombosis gorge. We encourage visitors to add to our check list of over 100 birds. The more serious hiker can visit the Drakensberg conservation areas nearby where one can do trails of varying degrees of difficulty. There are several smaller nature reserves within the uKhahlamba World Heritage Area- Cobham, Loteni and Vergelegen Reserves. They are administered by KZN Conservation Services. Red Chested Flufftail spotted in Sept this year below!
We have a easy 4km scenic mountain bike track suitable for the whole family.
Swimming, boating and tubing
The Lodge is situated at the finish of the Drak Challenge canoe marathon and the start of the Thromi XFest, an extreme sports event. Canoes, paddles and tubes are available to hire. Tubing is a favorite summer activity. Guests are dropped off about 5km upriver and tube back to the lodge. We have recently added a small splash pool for little ones.
Driving Range
Driving range suited to the better golfer. Bring your own clubs and practice balls. We will arrange to have them collected for you.
Children’s outdoor fun
Animal Farm (Tortoises, Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Turkeys, ducks & chickens), Jungle Gym/tree house and swings, Sandpit, Trampoline, mini golf & volleyball will keep your children enjoying this adventure playground all day long.
Horse Riding
Horse riding can be arrangement on our neighbouring farm (4km away)
Picnics at the River
A great idea to enjoy the area is to have a picnic. There are various areas around the lodge for you to enjoy including the island under the oak trees, and on the river bank. Pack your own basket or order a picnic basket from the restaurant.
Television & indoor sports
DSTV is available in the communal adult TV lounge for those sporting fixtures that cannot be missed. There is also a dart board & pool table. We have a games room with table tennis, soccer game, TV with DSTV & DVD player for rainy days in the KTV lounge.
Meals
We have a restaurant on site for a la carte breakfast’s, tea’s and lunche’s and a set dinner menu by prior arrangement with 2 options for dinner daily . The restaurant is open from 7-4 daily – except Mondays. The kitchen is closed on Mondays. Meals are served in the main dining room or weather permitting on the deck overlooking the river. We will also happily deliver your meal to your cottage. Please place your dinner order by 4:00pm.
